WHERE TO START

Getting into violin can be challenging. You probably have questions on how to find an instrument? Where can I learn the basics? What is the best way to get started? This page highlights how I started and the best way to continue.

Elementary School Orchestra

My experience started in third grade as a beginner musician. My older sister started in our local 5th grade strings program and we both began private string lessons. I took violin lessons and learned how to read music, play several songs on the violin and take care of the instruments. My recommendation is to first see if your school has a local program or if there are any private lesson teachers that can jump start learning to play an instrument.

Where to find an instrument?

Most major cities will have music shops that rent string instruments or offer quality instruments for sale. My recommendation is to start with a rental to first see if you enjoy the instrument. After a few years, and once you are up to a full size violin/other string instrument, it is time to move to a next level instrument.

Music Lessons

Like I mentioned earlier, music lessons are critical to developing proper violin skills. I started taking private lessons early on and it helped me to advance quickly! A good place to start is 30 minutes weekly and to practice 20-30 minutes daily for each of the lessons.
